Chapter 27

‘Zel, do you get the feeling your parents might suspect something,’ Rye’s colours shifted thoughtfully, after we’d finished listening to Dad walk back downstairs.

‘Suspect what?’ I frowned. ‘That we’re…?’

‘Mm,’ he nodded.

‘Um… no,’ I shot him an odd look. ‘Why…?’

‘The door.’

‘He knows about your anxiety Rye,’ I rolled my eyes.

‘Yes, I know, but I’ve had it more closed than he keeps leaving it. In fact I’ve closed it more than he keeps leaving it in between the fifteen million times he’s been up to check on us since we got up this morning,’ his colours continued to swirl thoughtfully. ‘He keeps leaving it at pretty much that exact distance.’

‘Are you sure?’

‘Yeah I… I’m pretty sure. I… I know it’s stupid, but I… I pay a lot of attention to… uh… to how open the door is.’

‘Okay, but… I did just get out of the hospital yesterday,’ I shrugged. ‘You know what my parents are like, they probably think they won’t be able tuh hear any shouts for help if something were tuh happen.’

‘True,’ he smirked. ‘I mean, I’m pretty sure your dad would have carried you up to bed last night if you hadn’t made it halfway upstairs without him noticing. But the door is only one of the reasons I’m wondering if they suspect.’

‘So what are the other reasons?’ I studied his colours carefully.

‘Okay, am I allowed to point out the fact your parents thought the best thing they could give you to celebrate getting out of the hospital was me,’ he teased.

‘Yes, but who else was gonna sleep on my floor?’ I reached across to wear he was sitting to ruffle his hair, wincing with pain for my efforts.

‘Zel, you need to be careful right now, the stitches,’ his colours turned over with concern, as he took gently hold of my wrist to pull my hand away.

‘Okay, for a start I’m pretty sure if it was that easy for them tuh rip open, they would have already. And, for a second, if you were on the bed beside me, it wouldn’t be an issue,’ I half teased.

‘Yeah, right, with the number of times they mentioned you needing to be calm and rest , I’m pretty sure your parents would flat out kill me if I was,’ Rye shook his head, then sighed and moved the chair he was on as close to the bed as he could.

‘Why are your colours telling me my overly protective parents being my overly protective parents is another reason you think they suspect?’ I cocked an eyebrow at him.

‘Because it is,’ he pulled a face as his gaze met with mine. ‘I think be calm might be their coded way of saying we shouldn’t do anything that… might make your heart race.’

‘Like being anywhere near you,’ I lowered my voice, and watched his colours flush.

‘Your… your dad,’ he coughed nervously in some vain attempt to pretend he hadn’t heard me, ‘he… he also said some things to me when we were driving up
